What is the Lean and Energy Toolkit?

The NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership has partnered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to provide toolkits designed to help manufacturing companies reduce energy waste, align production with environmental performance metrics and reduce environmental risk while using manufacturing chemicals.

The Lean and Energy Toolkit

Achieving Process Excellence Using Less Energy

Considerable energy savings typically accompany Lean activities because of Lean’s focus on eliminating non-value added activities (waste). Without explicit consideration of energy wastes, however, Lean may overlook significant opportunities to improve performance and reduce costs.

The Lean and Energy Toolkit was developed to assist manufacturing companies in reducing energy use and improving performance through Lean manufacturing. Drawing from the experiences and best practices of multiple industry and government partners, this toolkit describes practical strategies and techniques to improve energy and environmental performance while achieving Lean goals such as improved quality, reduced waste, and increased customer responsiveness. This toolkit assumes that you are familiar with Lean methods.
